Standard Process Whole Food Supplements®

Dr. Royal Lee, D.D.S. founded Standard Process in 1929.  He believed the key to maintaining the quality of nutritional supplements was a unique manufacturing process.  He designed the high-vacuum, low-temperature drying equipment to preserve the maximum nutrients of whole foods.  These technologies continue to be used today.  The company is continually growing, building on expert research and quality manufacturing first imposed by Dr. Lee.

The Process

"Whole food nutrition begins with sun, water, and fertile soil."

Dr. Royal Lee

The Kettle Moraine basin of Wisconsin contains rich, black soil laden with minerals and nutrients.  It is here, in company-owned, certified organic farmland, that strong, vital plants are grown and used as raw materials in Standard Process whole food supplements.  Crops that are regularly grown organically include alfalfa, beets, Spanish black radish, brussel sprouts, buckwheat, carrots, kidney beans, pea vine, and oats.  Each year the crops are rotated and the acreage is adjusted for each crop based on the estimated needs of the main production facility.

Organic farming practices are used to ensure the quality of the farmland for years to come.  In accordance with certification, Standard Process follows strict guidelines to grow their crops.  Farmland is monitored annually by certifying agencies to ensure that only the highest quality farming practices are taking place.

Most seeds are planted directly in the field, but some plants are started in the greenhouse, located at the facility before being transported into the field.  Irrigation water is supplied from a naturally occurring artesian flowage over five hundred feet below the farm's surface.

Organic weed control standards are strictly adhered to at the Standard Process Farm.  The main methods of weed control include cultivating, mowing, hand weeding, and cover crops - used for weed prevention and as a source of nitrogen and organic matter.  In addition, a crop flamer is utilized.  This is a tool utilized by the organic community to control weeds that come up between the crop rows before vegetables have a chance to canopy.  New technology will allow Standard Process to continually improve their efforts of weed management.

Quality Control

Standard Process follows Good Manufacturing Practices, which were written specifically for the dietary supplement industry.

Quality control methods ensure that the foods that eventually become Standard Process supplements are rich in nutrients and synergistic micronutrients.  Testing throughout the manufacturing process enables them to maintain critical processing control points to ensure quality and safety.

Products are tested between six to eight times throughout the manufacturing process.  Each week, trained scientists in Standard Process labs perform as many as 400 tests on raw materials, product batches, and finished products.  Testing procedures are approved by the Association of Analytical Communities (AOAC).  Trained microbiologists and chemists work hard to guarantee customers receive the best quality products on the market today.

Testing

Before anything is processed or grown, the nutrient and mineral levels of the soil are tested.  No chemical fertilizers or pesticides are ever used in the organic growing process.

Before the manufacturing process beings, scientists sample and test raw materials that will be used in whole food supplements.

Standard Process chemists perform assays on all raw materials and product batches to determine the vitamin and mineral content.  These assays guarantee that our label claims are accurate and that maximum nutrition is being delivered.

After the tableting and bottling process, physical tests are performed on the products.  Tablets are monitored for hardness, size, weight, moisture, and water activity.  Hardness and moisture testing ensures that the tablets remain intact throughout the packaging and shipping process.  Disintegration tests are run on tablets to make sure they dissolve within the USP time specification.  This ensures that the patient will be able to absorb the nutrients quickly and easily.  Powders and capsules are monitored for moisture and consistency.  The weight of all products are tested to guarantee label claims are met.
